This broke my heart. I think of people dear to me, without money to get gas to even go get food assistance at times…I don’t know. I think everyone should hear this story and take it to heart. Hundreds of thousands of people are suffering this winter in the US. In the state of Georgia, the government ran out of money for heating assistance before they even covered the elderly and disabled. THIS is why I get so angry when people call it welfare and dismiss it as socialism, as if that’s something nasty. It’s not a matter of political ideology. It’s a matter of human rights and decency. How can we call ourselves a functional society if we can’t take care of our weaker members? And how the HELL have we let this go on for so long?
